A Court of Thorns and Roses

Book: A Court of Thorns and Roses
Series: A Court of Thorns and Roses #1
Author: Sarah J. Maas

When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she's been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow grows over the faerie lands, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever.-Goodreads

Review: I have mixed feelings over this book but overall I really enjoyed it. The first part, where we learn about Feyre and her family, was fantastic. I was really drawn into her world and I was impressed with her survival skills. When Feyre moves to fairy...the book really slowed down and dragged and I felt like I had to force myself to read at several points. Feyre ends up living in the Spring Court with high Fae Tamlin, who although being somewhat bland, it is a pretty great guy. It doesn't take long for Feyre to get over her Fae prejudices and they fall in love. Of course, things aren't perfect at court, everyone has had glittery masks stuck to their faces (yes, I rolled my eyes at this as well) for several decades due to a magical curse and they are losing their powers. The last quarter of the book picks up the pace considerably when Feyre has to participate in some Hunger Games-esque activities and I couldn't put this down.

My favorite characters in this were not Tamlin (nice but boring) nor Feyre (resourceful although also a little boring), but rather Lucien, Tamlin's right-hand man and Rhys, another high Fae from a different court. I also loved the relationship between Feyre and her sister.

Although extremely slow at times, I enjoyed this one and can't wait for book #2!

*I'm not sure if there will be a love triangle in this series (she is planning a lot of books so who knows where the story will go)..but right now I'm loving Rhys. He's darker and more fun than Tamlin!

Grade: 4/5

This is a series that can only get better after such an expansive and engaging set-up. There are so many characters, relationships and plot developments I want to know more about. The wait for the second book is already interminable, so I'll just have to revisit and revel in this enchanting and suspenseful book again and again.
